Hiawassee River < >

Snaking through the countryside of western North Carolina the Hiawassee River is probably the greatest sleeper among southern trout waters.

All rainbow and brown trout, unless they've migrated into the main flow from stocked tributaries, are wild and naturally reproducing. Legend has it, that the wild rainbows are descended from California's McCloud River strain; the root stock of many rainbows worldwide.

Wading angles will find some great fishing;  but floating the river in canoes, rafts etc will be loads of fun too.

If you want more excitment have some fun on the Nantahala River whitewater rafting.  This is one of the most popular spots in the Southeast and with Class II and III rapids, is considered a "family friendly" river.
